The Firefly Watching Tour is one of the most popular evening activities in Puerto Princesa, offering a serene contrast to the adventure-filled daytime tours. It typically takes place in the protected mangrove forests of the Iwahig or Sicsican rivers, where thousands of fireflies create a natural light show against the dark canopy. Tour Overview The experience is centered around a quiet paddle boat cruise through narrow river channels. Because fireflies are sensitive to light and noise, the tours use non-motorized boats and strict "no flash" policies to preserve the natural behavior of the colonies. Natural Light Show: You will see thousands of fireflies flickering in unison among the mangrove trees, a phenomenon that local guides often describe as looking like "living Christmas trees." Bioluminescent Plankton: On many tours, especially during darker moon phases, you can also see glowing plankton in the water that lights up when disturbed by the boat's paddles. Stargazing: Away from the city's light pollution, the boat ride offers an excellent opportunity for stargazing, with guides often pointing out major constellations. Popular Locations Iwahig Firefly Watching Mangrove Ecotourism and Wildlife Park: The most established site, located about 30–45 minutes from the city center. It is a community-based project that focuses heavily on the ecological education of the mangrove system. Sicsican River: A common alternative often combined with a dinner cruise in Puerto Princesa Bay. This route frequently starts with a motorized boat from the city's Baywalk before switching to smaller paddle boats at the river mouth.
